Clate recently received a PhD in Cultural Anthropology from Goldsmiths College, University of London. His fieldwork centered upon environmentalism in practice within the rural south-western region of the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica. During graduate school he taught introductory anthropology courses, gave presentations across a number of conferences, and developed scholarship at the intersection of political ecology, environmental theory, and conservation. Before heading to London, Clate completed an MA in cultural anthropology at the New School for Social Research, and holds a BA in History and MAT for Social Studies from Colorado College. He taught middle and high school students in Colorado before spending two years teaching social studies at a bilingual school in Puerto Rico. Additionally, Clate is an avid photographer, traveller, and environmentalist – inspired by many advocates today working in the field of socio-environmental justice.
