Focus

Matthew specialises in climate accountability and finance issues, using U.S. corporate, financial, and securities law and regulation to tackle the climate and biodiversity impacts of international corporations operating in the Americas. He also supports ClientEarth’s expanding presence in South America, engaging with local stakeholders and scoping opportunities to advance environmental protection and indigenous peoples’ rights across the region.

Matthew joined ClientEarth in August 2023 as a staff attorney. He is currently based in New York City.

Experience

Before joining ClientEarth, Matthew was a white collar and regulatory defence attorney at the global law firm of Debevoise & Plimpton LLP in New York City, where he focused primarily on Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) investigations and compliance across multiple jurisdictions. Prior to his career as an attorney, Matthew was a Fulbright Study and Research Fellow in the demography department at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Education

Matthew received his Juris Doctor cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where he was a Dean’s Fellow, Foreign Language & Area Studies Fellow (Arabic), and recipient of the distinguished pro bono service award. He graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Social Research and Public Policy from New York University Abu Dhabi. Matthew is fluent in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, and proficient in Arabic.

Matthew is a member of the state bar of New York.
